Why would so many big companies agree to work together?
Initially, it was meant to reduce the fragmentation in the smart home market. It has been backed by the likes of Apple, Amazon, Google, Comcast, Samsung SmartThings and more. Eventually, it will support more than 280 device categories, including smart lights and bulbs, plugs, switches, smart thermostats, smart shades, connected locks, appliances and other devices.
It also will enable them to communicate over a local network instead of the Internet, using Ethernet or Wi-Fi, or, for older systems, an existing bridge to Thread. Thread is a low-power protocol that allows devices to create their own mesh networks that can communicate with one another, and it uses encryption backed by banking-standard public-key cryptography.
Some of the smart-home brands that supported Matter at launch have already started announcing compatible products. In December, Amazon announced that it will support Matter over Wi-Fi in its Echo 4th-gen smart speakers and Echo Dot Studios and Flexes. And in spring, it will upgrade its Eero Wi-Fi routers to be Thread border routers, and will expand its support for Matter to more device types, such as thermostats and blinds.
Eventually, you’ll be able to buy Matter-compatible devices without spending hours checking compatibility lists and checking for the “Works With” badges on their packaging. And you’ll be able to control them with whatever app or ecosystem you prefer, from your iPhone or Android phone or tablet, or even with Siri, Alexa or Bixby.
