In a universe filled with princesses, superheroes and traumatising character deaths, it’s refreshing that Disney took the risk of releasing a movie based on an orphaned teenager who adopts a blue alien as her best friend. Lilo and Stitch is a delightful and entertaining film with a heartwarming message about family and the power of ‘ohana’.
Starring Daveigh Chase as the rambunctious and eccentric Hawaiian girl Lilo Pelekai, Tia Carrere as Nani, her stressed-out older sister and legal guardian, and Christopher Sanders as exterminator-turned-alien Stitch, the film tells the story of how two unlikely friends became a part of each other’s lives. When social worker Cobra Bubbles visits, she is concerned that Nani cannot care for herself and her rambunctious younger sister and threatens to place them in foster care, but after hearing Lilo praying for a friend, the woman decides to take the little extraterrestrial in and name him Stitch.
Despite raising some eyebrows at its PG rating (it does have some violence and off-color humor), the film is fun to watch and is an enjoyable way to spend an evening. The storyline is believable and it’s clear that the creators of the film have done a good job of researching Polynesian culture and making the characters likable.
